…y a minute too many. There are plenty of places you can find support networks in the digital world. Better to keep your relationships with friends and family based on things you have in common, rather than trying to fit them into parts of your life where they may not be helpful or even interested.

To be honest, I used to have a lot of friend who were layabouts. They didn’t care much when I started trying to make something of myself, and even made a few snide comments. I know this is common because I hear people struggling with the same thing.
Your response made me realize I did exactly what you’re talking about — I went to other communities for support. It’s definitely possible to keep existing relationships AND move toward a different career.
