Today, I read an awful story in a good book.

In WWII, the Japanese were ready to invade the Malay peninsula. England got its rubber from there. Rubber makes treads. Treads make tanks. Tanks win wars.

Without rubber, England was screwed. So, they moved as much rubber as possible to a stockpile in India. Sadly, the entire stockpile caught fire and burned down. No more rubber.

“Don’t worry,” said a British economist. “The rubber was insured.”
