“I mean no disrespect, but are you sure?”

You know what, honestly, I am not sure.

Certainly I don’t want to contribute to the hyperbolic rhetoric usually being spewed across the Internet, but I do believe it takes a while for any Creative to reach anything resembling originality.

Most of my early work copied my idols. And I don’t mean “was inspired by” I mean copied. Directly. I would come up with a principle I thought was original and then realize one of my role models wrote a post that sounded exactly the same.

When I say “no Creative is really original,” I’m attacking the suffocating pressure I’ve felt at times from coming up with an idea that never has been thought of by anyone ever. That’s a difficult bill to fill in a world where there is more content published in 48 hours than there was from the beginning of time to 2007.

It looks like you and I really agree on most things — I think SEO is garbage and is shoehorning would-be new ideas into watered down garbage which doesn’t help anyone.

I also think originality IS a new combination of existing ideas.

Do some people come into the world with completely new ideas — that is, those which come about through no exterior influence or input? I don’t know. Maybe.

But do most?

I doubt it.

Thanks so much for adding to this conversation and giving me a chance to expand. :)
